After years of experience, I've learned the best way to dress for busy London days in winter is lots and lots of layers which is why a gilet is a must have.

Even though the weather has turned icy cold you should never underestimate the power of a gilet, especially during these winter months.  I’m a total sucker for one and I think they’re a wardrobe essential lots of people forget about.

Living in London (and I’m sure it’s the same in most cities) I spend my entire time pounding the streets, dipping in and out of shops and jumping on the tube, which means in the winter I’m constantly going from the freezing cold to warm and toasty.  Although wearing a huge coat is great for when you’re running around outside, the minute you’re back indoors you have to immediately throw it off and you’re stuck awkwardly carrying it while you peruse shops or wait to pick up your coffee.

After years of experience, I’ve learned the best way to dress for busy London days in winter is lots and lots of layers which is why a gilet is a must have.  You can pretty much layer anything underneath it, making them super versatile.  I shot this look when the weather was still quite mild, so I styled it with just a shirt but as the months get colder, I’ll be layering gorgeous knits and even tailored jackets underneath.

I’ve amassed quite a collection ranging from very affordable high street options to more luxury pieces.  The great thing about a gilet is there’s one to suit all budgets.  I’m wearing two different versions in this post, one is high street and the other is high end.  I wanted to show that it doesn’t matter what the price point is, it always manages to look chic.

I’ve linked 6 amazing ones below starting from £50 and finishing with an almighty £1900.  The second one is from Oasis and is £55 and I think it’s absolutely fab! I love the colour, length and gorgeous fit.  Plus they have it in black too (click HERE to check it out).

If you’re still not persuaded by the gilet you can catch a very old post HERE featuring one of my favourites from Iris & Ink for some more styling inspo.  Iris & Ink, who are one of my favourite brands of all time, always bring out gorgeous quality gilets every season which are definitely worth splurging on.  I HIGHLY recommend them!
