The honesty and lack of upselling was something I really appreciated.
One of the funny things about blogging is people expect you to be uber confident about the way you look. Given that bloggers spend a lot of time prancing around in front of a camera, it’s not a surprising misconception. However, the truth is I’m far more aware of my flaws now than before I started blogging. Being in front of that camera highlights wrinkles in places you never knew you had and terrible angles which can make you look like some sort of ogre!
One thing which constantly bothered me when I was editing photos was my teeth. I have a big smile and I pride myself on creating smiley content. There’s no “resting bitch face” on this blog, as I want it to be an inviting and positive place. Unfortunately, this means there is no escaping my teeth. Over the years, they’ve really yellowed and I became very self-conscious about it.
Teeth whitening (or even veneers) was something I’d been considering for a while but I wasn’t sure where to go. My first concern was I wanted it done by a fully trained professional. Years ago, a friend of mine had her teeth whitened at a pop up stand in Westfield and let’s just say she suffered major sensitivity afterwards.
When I met Megan, who works at Harley Street Dental Clinic we just seemed to click. She understood my needs but was also very honest about the level of treatment I required. When I told her I had been considering veneers, she laughed and said it was the last thing I needed. I also asked her about filing a couple of my teeth down and again, she told me it wasn’t needed and wouldn’t necessarily improve my appearance. The honesty and lack of upselling was something I really appreciated.
In the end, we went for an in surgery whitening session and home whitening trays. During my first appointment, Megan took impressions of my teeth for the trays which was surprisingly quick. I was in and out of the dentist chair in a flash.
A week later at my second appointment, I had the in surgery Zoom! whitening. This consisted of 4 separate 15minutes sessions where a laser was used to whiten my teeth.
If I’m totally honest I found the whole process quite fiddly. I should add here, another reason it took so long to take the plunge and get my teeth whitened is because I am NOT a fan of the dentist. I hate things being put in my mouth and being prodded around.
Teeth whitening is basically an hour of having your mouth yanked opened. It’s not painful but I did find it uncomfortable. Although I imagine for others this could be a really relaxing procedure, as when else do you have a full hour to lie back and do nothing?
Having said all of that, as soon as I saw the results all the discomfort and boredom disappeared. My teeth were several shades lighter and I was really happy with the results.
Megan recommended I use the at home whitening trays over 5-6 nights just to get that extra shade or 2 lighter. A good indication is your teeth should match the whites of your eyes, as it balances out your face. Neither your eyes or teeth should detract from one another.
Like the in surgery treatment, the home whitening trays aren’t the most comfortable. They need to be worn overnight with the whitening gel. However, the discomfort is outweighed by the excitement every morning when you see the change in your teeth. The great thing about teeth whitening is the results are fairly instantaneous.
Two weeks on I’m delighted with the finished results. I’ve been baring my teeth to anyone and everyone! Although the procedure wasn’t my favourite, I would still go back and do it again and again.
These are my before and after photos:
Megan offers teeth whitening in London and Bournemouth. Her Harley Street prices are £550 for the full service (in surgery whitening and home trays) or from £350 for just the home whitening trays. I would highly recommend getting in touch if you’re thinking about having your teeth whitened. I totally hear you when you say bloggers are supposed to be confident with their looks. I make videos every week and I usually hate how I look. I need to get my teeth whitened asap, I’m going to make an appointment fast.

I’ve always wanted to whitening my teeth! I used a lot of products in my house and they totally worked, but it sounds better and more efficient to do it with a dentist. Your smile looks so beautiful! and it really shows the good work they did 🙂

Great results. People do have the misperception that bloggers are uber confident. I’m not a resting bitch face kind of person either and my blog and social media are filled with me grinning and smiling. It just comes naturally. Even though I like the color of my teeth I have a small gap in the bottom row of my teeth and I try not to focus on it too much but it bothers me. Not sure if I want to do something about it yet.

Lovely smile, darling! I have been thinking about using those teeth whitening trays at home. And I like the tip you gave about your teeth being the same color as the whites of your eyes.

Thank you for writing such an interesting post. I have been thinking about whitening my teeth also, but I’m so scared! I have heard so many horror stories with way too white teeth, sensitive teeth etc. People rarely blog about when something like this went nicely, so this gave me a little boost.
